Detailed Project DescriptionThe Can Tho oil and gasoline storage is situated on deep deposits of soft alluvium. The storage consists of eight circular oil tanks, each with a diameter of 18.5 m and a height of 12 m. The preferred foundation solution was to use cement columns, utilizing the dry mix method.
The improved soil provides a stable platform that transfers the loads from the oil tanks to deeper soil layers.
The project was completed within the time schedule of 3 months.

Soil conditions
- Soft, silty clay with low organic content
- Undrained shear strength: 10-20kPa
- Natural water content: 55-70%
- Depth of soft soil: 42 meters
| Design
- Raft foundation using 600mm cement columns
- Design ground pressure: 110 kPa
- Short columns in overlapping grid pattern for improved stability and lateral capacity
- Long columns as soldier piles to reduce settlement
|
Technical results
- Expected long term settlements: 25 cm
- Measured settlement at full load test of tank: 6.5 cm
